Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Shelved Days After Budapest Negotiations Suggested
Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.
Recently Trump indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest soon to address the ongoing hostilities.
A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was not "needed".
The White House did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.
Previous Developments
Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Some reports indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.
Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a truce plan backed by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the current front line.
"Leave it as is the way it is," he stated.
Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the existing front lines.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, indicating that freezing the front line would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.
Diplomatic Positions
The "root causes" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that encompass the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country โ a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.
He also said the only topic that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.
Military Considerations
The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.
The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he commented.
