Contaminated Seafood Issue: The Nation Confronts Pollution in Major Manufacturing Area

An extensive industrial zone situated on the outskirts of the capital is addressing nuclear contamination after an official team found presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing facilities inside the site, which includes businesses that export chilled marine products.

Urgent Response and Product Withdrawal

This discovery has triggered immediate decontamination efforts and the relocation of local residents, coming after a similar contamination alert in the US that was linked to the Jakarta plants.

An important multinational retailer is among the businesses that have recalled items from its shelves after the finding.

Probe and Discovery of Pollution

Indonesian officials launched an investigation after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a consignment of chilled breaded shrimp sent by a local company.

The FDA issued an warning instructing distributors and retailers to discard the goods and not sell it, even though the found amount was well under the agency's action limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.

The FDA stated: “The primary health effect of worry following extended, ongoing low dose contact (eg through consumption of polluted food or liquid over a period) is an increased risk of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Checks

Radiation scans showed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The official team did not identify the 21 additional production facilities, but said they would immediately receive decontamination processes conducted by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official declared that people living in strongly polluted areas would be moved until the location was decontaminated, adding that the well-being of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.

Health officials also performed examinations on local employees and people living near the industrial estate, identifying 9 people who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being allowed to return home.

Decontamination and Containment Measures

The affected sites will immediately receive cleanup operations by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Officials have further designated the site of a recycled metal factory as an containment facility for contaminated materials.

Indonesia, which operates no atomic energy facilities or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from abroad.

Source of Contamination and Import Restrictions

An official spokesperson told reporters that scrap metal imports were the likely cause of contamination and confirmed the government would immediately enforce limits on scrap metal imports. He said that vehicles were also being checked for potential exposure as they moved through the region.

About Caesium-137 and Public Risks

Caesium-137 is a hazardous nuclear isotope that usually appears in the environment as a result of atomic testing or incidents, such as Fukushima or Chornobyl. Trace quantities are found in earth, food and the atmosphere.

The amount found in the chilled prawns was much less than FDA intervention limits, but the authority stated prolonged contact to including low doses of the element was associated to an elevated risk of cancer.

Withdrawal Information

The recalled seafood was sold at large retail locations across at least a 12 American states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
