American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said travel would be held up due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in history.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.
